Syria condemns Jordan’s air raids

Damascus, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Foreign Ministry on Tuesday expressed regret over the airstrikes launched by the Jordanian Air Force on national territory without justification for such military operations.

In a statement, the Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ministry indicated that the recent upsurge in tensions is not in accordance with the agreements for cooperation to crack down all violations.

Incidentally, it stressed that the ministers of Foreign Affairs, Defense and Security sent letters to their Jordanian counterparts as they proposed operational measures to control the borders and showed Syria’s readiness to cooperate with the neighboring country’s institutions.

“However, those proposals were dismissed, and Syria received no response from Jordan,” the Foreign Ministry noted.

In that regard, Damascus reaffirmed its commitment to fighting terrorism and preventing smuggling and drug trafficking.

It also noted that Syria will continue to confront those criminal activities.

The statement came after the death of ten Syrian nationals in an airstrike on the villages of Malah and Arman, south of Sweida, near the Jordanian border.

Local media suggested that the fighters might belong to the Jordanian Air Force, although Amman did not issue any statement or clarification on the matter.

In this context, the Syrian Ministry of Defense reported that the air defense forces shot down a drone near the Jordanian border.

Such incidents followed clashes on the Syrian-Jordanian border in early January, with a death toll and detainees.
