Paraguayan government claims of crime reduction rejected

Asunción, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) Paraguayan President Santiago Peña's statement on Monday about a 75% reduction in crime since December generated indignation among the citizens, the newspaper Última Hora reported.

The negative response of the people to the statistics in favor of curbing insecurity obtained by the president from Police Commander, Carlos Benítez, was due to the daily increase in reports of robberies and other criminal acts carried out in an increasingly violent manner, the newspaper stated.

The officer argued that these data were processed by the Intelligence Directorate and the Interior Ministry’s Criminal Behavior Observatory, based on the reports made by each jurisdiction, but they contrast with reality, Última Hora informed.

Peña used these sources to assure that the occurrence of punishable acts such as drug trafficking, robbery and theft decreased due to the incorporation of more agents, the control of the Tacumbú prison, and the separation of criminal and delinquent groups that operated from that and other prisons.
