ECOSOC to analyze progress and challenges in labor market

Santiago de Chile, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) will analyze in Chile future works, its opportunities and limitations, as a result of the changes caused by technologies, globalization and demographic trends.

The extraordinary meeting of ECOSOC will take place at the headquarters of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) and will be attended by some 80 representatives of governments, senior officials of the United Nations and other international organizations and members of civil society.

ECLAC warned that labor markets are undergoing an unprecedented transformation due to factors such as technological advances, including Artificial Intelligence, global economic integration and the green transition, which have benefited some sectors while creating disruptions in others, particularly for the most vulnerable groups, including low-skilled workers and those in the informal sector.

ECLAC also added that gender gaps and barriers to the full participation of women in the world of work still persist, while the underground economy generates precarious jobs with limited access to social protection.

The meeting will feature plenary sessions, interactive round tables and a side event to commemorate the 75th anniversary of ECLAC.

Among the participants are Paula Narváez, president of ECOSOC; UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed; and the Deputy Secretary General for Economic and Social Affairs, Li Junhua, the Executive Secretary of ECLAC, José Manuel Salazar-Xirinachs; and the director general of the International Labor Organization (ILO), Gilbert Houngbo.
