Cuban president ratifies support for Colombian peace process

Havana, Jan 23 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Díaz-Canel ratified his country's support for the peace talks in Colombia, which were resumed by the Government and the National Liberation Army's (ELN) representatives in this capital.

On his X account, Díaz-Canel welcomed the opening in Havana of the sixth cycle of the peace talks between the warring parties in that armed conflict that has lasted more than half a century.

Earlier, Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez reaffirmed Cuba’s commitment to peace in Colombia in its role as Guarantor State in that process.

Rodríguez commented that he met with his counterparts from Venezuela, Yván Gil, and Nicaragua, Denis Moncada in Uganda in the context of the recently concluded Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit and the G77+China Third South Summit.

The head of Cuban diplomacy informed on the same social platform that these three nations will continue calling for the brotherhood of Latin America and the Caribbean and for the defense of the right to self-determination of our peoples.

The ELN delegation, in turn, expressed with a virtual message its expectations to make progress in the peace talks and “to get closer to the transformations that Colombia needs.”

In May 2023, Havana hosted the third cycle of the Peace Negotiation Table between these fighting forces, which seeks to solve the conflict based on a broad consensus of their society.
