WHO to debate over 40 health issues with global impact

Geneva, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) Over 40 impacting issues on global health will be debated this week during the 154th Executive Board Session of the World Health Organization (WHO).

Among issues to be analyzed were the 14th WHO General Program of Work (GPW14); prevention, preparedness and response to health emergencies; the acceleration of national and global responses to antimicrobial resistance (AMR); as well as the impact of climate change on health, among other priority issues.

On the event’s opening ceremony, WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus praised his agency´s achievements in 2023, among which he mentioned the end of Covid-19 and Mpox as global health emergencies.

Ghebreyesus further highlighted challenges posed last year, such as preventable diseases and deaths, and the upsurge of conflicts and disasters.

In this context, the executive stated, “2024 will be a watershed year for global health,” with opportunities for Member States to “shape the global health strategy for the next four years at GPG14.”
