The event has brought together dozens of information professionals from some 30 countries who advocate for counter-hegemonic communication models capable of historically giving visibility to subjugated majorities.
During the first session, held at the Royalton Havana hotel on Sunday, President Miguel Díaz-Canel described as excellent the celebration of the 65th anniversary of those days in January 1959, when the reality of the emerging Cuban Revolution was spread to the world.
The head of State emphasized that wherever there is an alternative communication project against hegemony, there is an Operation Truth, and on this point, he stressed the importance of these efforts to expose the damage of the blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba, and to denounce other punitive policies such as Cuba’s inclusion on Washington’s State Sponsors of Terrorism (SSOT) list.
In that regard, Ghassan Ben Jeddou, chair of the Board of Directors of Al Mayadeen, stressed that humanity is living one of the severe struggles for liberation in the light of injustice, racism, and brutal occupation.
Prensa Latina President Luis Enrique González, in turn, explained that this conference is an opportunity to exchange viewpoints on world journalism in a convulsive context.
González recalled how Prensa Latina, the first and leading alternative media in the region to date, emerged a few months after Truth Operation.
He said, “Its value is linked to the pressing need to speak with its voice as a pioneer and school of the struggle from the Global South against disinformation, manipulation, and fake news.”
