At ministerial level, the document was ratified by 30 countries of the area, in a common effort to eliminate hunger and reduce malnutrition, according to a press release issued by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Government representatives from the 30 countries discussed the issue at a recent face-to-face and virtual meeting promoted by FAO’s regional office in the Chilean capital.

The ministers participating in the forum unanimously validated the new Food and Nutritional Security and Hunger Eradication Plan 2030, whose preparation process began in January 2023 at the request of the heads of state and government of the member countries of the organization.

In addition to technical advice from FAO, the initiative was supported by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), the Latin American Integration Association (LAIA) and the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA).

According to the source, this regional document will help move towards “more inclusive, efficient, resilient and sustainable agrifood systems”.

According to FAO’s Assistant Director-General and Regional Representative for Latin America and the Caribbean, Mario Lubetkin, this is an “articulated response” to the impact of different events and challenges the region is facing.
