Joe Biden defends women’s rights ahead of anti-abortion measures

Washington, Jan 22 (Prensa Latina) President Joe Biden on Monday warned, on what would be the 51st anniversary of the Roe v. Wade ruling, that both health and lives of women are endangered by extreme state bans on abortion.

He recalled that on January 22 (but in 1973), the Supreme Court recognized with that verdict a woman’s constitutional right to make deeply personal decisions with her doctor, free from interference by politicians.

After, a year and a half ago, the same court made the extreme decision to overturn Roe and take her away a constitutional right and as a result, tens of millions of women now live in states with extreme and dangerous abortion bans.

Because of Republican elected officials, women’s health and lives are at risk, Biden said.

In states across the country, women are being turned away from emergency rooms, forced to go to court to seek permission to get the medical care they need, and forced to travel hundreds of miles for medical care, Biden admitted.

Even as Americans – from Ohio to Kentucky, Michigan, Kansas and California – have resoundingly rejected attempts to limit reproductive freedom, GOP elected officials continue to push for a national ban and devastating new restrictions across the country, the US president stressed.

President Biden stressed he and his Vice President Kamala Harris will continue fighting “to protect women’s reproductive freedom against the dangerous, extreme and out-of-touch agenda of Republican officials.”

He also reiterated they stand up with “the vast majority of Americans who support a woman’s right to choose and we continue to call on Congress to restore Roe’s protections in federal law once and for all.”

Ahead of continuing threats to reproductive freedom, Joe Biden called the fourth meeting of the Reproductive Health Care Access Task Force on Monday to announce new actions on behalf of reproductive health care access.

The group will also hear directly from doctors on the front lines about consequences of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, which provided legal protections for women to decide about their own bodies.

As Harris kicks off a national tour (Fight for Reproductive Freedoms) as part of the Democratic administration’s initiative to curb extreme attacks on abortion across the United States.
