The earth tremor, followed by aftershocks, occurred early this morning and is related to volcano-tectonic type rock fracturing.
Authorities have kept the yellow alert in the vicinity of the volcano, mainly in the communes of Villarrica, Pucón, Curarrehue and Panguipulli.
Located between the southern regions of La Araucanía and Los Ríos, Villarrica has an altitude of 2,847 meters and is one of the most active volcanoes in South America.
The latest eruptions occurred in 1971, 1984 and 2015, according to the Sernageomin website.
