Mahamat considered that these conflicts and other issues on a global scale enable to bring forth the fragmentation of the world. “The only resource that Africa has in the face of the challenges of our time is its unity and solidarity. A unity that we build with perseverance and tolerance, in a cooperative effort that transcends particularities, neutralizes considerations contrary to the general interest and is constantly inspired by mutual understanding,” he expressed.

As in other occasions, he called for a humanitarian ceasefire in Palestine and challenged the international community to give concrete form to the two-state solution to end the Palestinian-Israeli conflict. “The conflict is unfolding with indescribable intensity, giving rise to humanitarian tragedies of unprecedented magnitude, characterized by flagrant disregard for international law and international humanitarian law,” he stressed.

He denounced that the bombings against Palestinian civilians, the systematic destruction of their lives, their means of existence, the trivialization of death combine in a tragedy that has lasted for a hundred days. “The African conscience is shaken by this unprecedented tragedy,” he stressed.

The agenda of the CPR meeting also features continental priority discussions such as the progress of the organization’s institutional and financial reforms, which include the implementation of the AU Peace Fund.

The meeting is part of the preparations for the AU Summit, scheduled for February 14th-18th, which will analyze how the continent can maintain momentum to address issues of peace and security, regional integration and development.

The annual meeting of African leaders will question the progress made in addressing the worrying security situation and conflicts in some of its Member States and offer recommendations on innovative ways to sustainably address crises in an attempt to return to peace.
