President of Guatemala summons the Attorney General to a meeting

Guatemala City, January 19 (Prensa Latina) The president of Guatemala, Bernardo Arévalo, today formally summoned the Attorney General of the Nation, Consuelo Porras, for the next 24 and asked her for a report on four situations that he considers transcendental.

The president sent the invitation letter to the Public Ministry (MP) protected by article 134 of the Constitution, which establishes the coordination of the work of the institution in charge of directing the General State Policy.

In relation to the aspects classified as crucial, he first included the “advance of criminal proceedings linked to decisions of the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR).”

He requested information on the progress of the criminal proceedings investigated by the MP in compliance with the orders of the IACHR, “in which the responsibility of the State for denial of justice was declared.”

The second issue is related to “criminal prosecution criteria in cases of freedom of expression and press” and required a detailed analysis of the policy in that regard.

Another issue is the “investigation into the purchase of Covid-19 vaccines”, information on the existence of a criminal investigation related to the process of acquiring them as bribe payments with treasury funds.

In addition, the head of state added, the lack of planning for an immunization campaign and the delays in the delivery of the product, thus violating the right to life.

In the last one, he demanded “protocol for action regarding precautionary measures from the IACHR”, details regarding the MP’s actions when receiving notifications of precautionary measures decreed for people considered victims of violations of their fundamental rights.

The governor’s document explained that with the elements provided in the report, instructions will be issued to officials of the Executive Agency who collaborate with the security and justice sector.

Arévalo, after winning the 2023 elections, denounced the MP’s investigations against his party Movimiento Semilla as the spearhead of an ongoing coup d’état, promoted by the corrupt pact in this country.

In different statements he confirmed that he would request the resignation of Porras, something that for 106 consecutive days indigenous authorities before the Prosecutor’s Office demanded, without achieving the objective.

The previous national president, ALejandro Giammattei, expressed on several occasions that the Law prevented him from removing Porras from her position, like the other MP officials.

The political situation generated in this Central American territory -according to analysts- was the result of actions by State agencies, mainly the MP, which, with the appearance of legality, were contrary to the common good.

Entities that have joined the protests since last October described the attorney general and other of her subordinates as guarantors of impunity in Guatemala.
