Rapporteur calls for strong actions to stop genocide in Gaza

Madrid, Jan 18 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in the Palestinian territory, Francesca Albanese, today called for stronger actions to stop the genocide in Gaza.

At a press conference in this capital, the independent rapporteur said she does not have the profile to force the UN to exert greater pressure on the international community, but, “the atrocities that are committed against children, the elderly, women and civilians in general by the Israeli Army must cease.”

The only way out of Israel’s offensive on the Gaza Strip, which leaves a provisional toll of around 25,000 dead, 10,000 of them children, is to seek that its international partners force the Tel Aviv regime to a ceasefire.

“I feel devastated by the biggest conflict I have seen in my life and it is more urgent than ever to address it on the basis of war crimes, the unjustifiable brutality of the Israeli army,” Albanese said when responding to questions from Prensa Latina.

She believed that the vast majority of Western countries do not assume the responsibility of protecting Gaza and everything comes down to equating what happened under the cover of Hamas aggression that caused the death of 1,200 Israelis on October 7.

Israel has carried out six thousand weekly bombings, along with ruthless attacks, without taking civilians into account, and forced the displacement of 1.4 million people from the Gaza Strip, the official said.

He stressed that, in parallel, the population is subjected to subhuman living conditions, with terrible health coverage and people die from the effect of bombs, hunger, thirst, cold and electricity cuts, in addition to the humiliation of citizens. that comes from the Israeli colonizing practice.

In his words at the European Parliament headquarters in Madrid, Albanese admitted that the effect of international solidarity is still insufficient, in the face of a ‘political reality that is very difficult to change’ if countries with the capacity to pressure Israel (especially the United States), they do not take a step to press more.

She criticized the permanent violations of international humanitarian law and the passive attitude of Europe, where the attitude of one or two countries in trying to get Tel Aviv to accept a ceasefire remained wishful thinking, something that, she regretted, Spain has not done either.

He also criticized Egypt, from where very worrying information comes, such as the charging of thousands of dollars to some Palestinians who try to cross the border.

The UN rapporteur pointed out that citizens on both sides of the border, Palestinians and good Israelis, suffer the consequences of this campaign of extermination.

“(…) It’s too late. Again, we cannot only consider ourselves observers, and we must continue to ask that we return to the path of international law that involves the two being recognized, that their mutual pain and humanity be recognized.

Albanese then participated in a central event together with Manu Pineda, who also chairs the Delegation for relations with Palestine of the European Parliament.

Under the motto ‘Palestine, the right to exist’, the meeting featured, in addition to Albanese and Pineda, the Minister of Youth and Children, Sira Rego, and the director of the newspaper ‘Público’, Virginia Pérez Alonso.
