U.S. Senate refused Tuesday night´s request by the Department of State (DoS) to report Senate on any evidence of human rights violations by Israel.
The proposal was presented by Senator Bernie Sanders (Independent, Vermont) and was rejected by 72-11 votes.
Had the request been approved, DoS would have prepared a report in 30-day time on whether Israel’s military actions over Gaza really violate human rights and international laws. It could impact – if so – Washington’s military assistance to Tel Aviv.
Sanders’ request comes at a time when President Joe Bien has been pushing since October for the approval in Congress of a $106 billion supplemental package that would be earmarked for Ukraine, Israel and border security.
In December, Joe Biden owned up to the international public opinion is turning against Israel, whose war declared against Hamas in Gaza on past October 7 exceeded 24,000 deaths, according to Palestinian sources.
Throughout this time President Biden expressed that his “administration’s support for Israel’s security is like a solid rock”.
“We will continue providing military assistance to Israel till they eliminate Hamas, but we have to be careful, they have to be careful,” Biden added.
Popular opinion worldwide – Biden stressed – might change overnight, we cannot let that happen.
Supporting Israel is not new. The United States sends billions of dollars in military aid to Israel every single year.
Reports from DoS and DoD showed that U.S. military assistance to Israel has exceeded $225.2 billion in today’s prices from 1951 to 2022.
But at the national level, repulsion is surging. Demonstrations calling for President Biden to cease fire in Gaza are happening daily, while the call for ‘Free Palestine’ is becoming more and more frequent.
