Victims of eye injuries demand attention from the Chilean State

Santiago de Chile, Jan 17 (Prensa Latina) Victims of eye trauma during the 2019 social outbreak in Chile claimed in the city of Concepción, Biobío region, to speed up the processes against those responsible and receive personalized support from the State.

During the social protests in Santiago and the country’s main cities, security forces harshly repressed protesters and caused some 30 deaths and thousands of injuries.

Among the injured are more than 400 with severe eye trauma, loss of vision or facial disfigurement due to police use of shotguns with special pellets.

Although the government has promised to provide them with the necessary attention and to investigate the culprits of these human rights violations, the process is not progressing with the necessary speed.

In the Biobío Region there are 15 victims, two of whom were minors at the time of the popular uprising, Olimpia Riveros, councilor of the city of Concepción, reported.

Of these cases, two are at an advanced stage, an equal number have not yet begun, 10 have been filed in court and only one has identified the person responsible.

Rodrigo Lagarini, one of the injured, said their mental situation is critical and is aggravated by the lack of personalized follow-up.

This explains, he added, that at the national level four of the victims of eye trauma during the social outbreak chose to take their own lives in the face of the indifference of the authorities.

The Human Rights lawyer, Esteban Arevalo, assured there will be no rest until the truth and justice are found.

He added that since these are crimes against humanity, there is no danger that the statute of limitations will expire and the perpetrators will enjoy impunity.
