Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning was responding to media reports that Beijing is allegedly pressuring Nauru to break its ties with Taiwan.
Mao stressed that Nauru’s decision was based on a correct choice made independently as a sovereign country.”
The spokeswoman stressed, “Those who see dollar diplomacy as a go-tool need to understand that there are things that money cannot buy. The one-China principle is a fundamental principle that cannot be traded and has a prevailing international consensus.”
Mao added that developing diplomatic relations and carrying out practical cooperation in several fields “promise broad prospects and will bring unprecedented development opportunities for Nauru.”
Shortly after the elections in Taiwan, the Government of Nauru decided to re-establish diplomatic ties with China and joined the 182 countries that recognize the one-China principle.
