Chilean President welcomes CELAC meeting on food security

Santiago de Chile, Jan 16 (Prensa Latina) In a message to the meeting of CELAC agriculture ministers, Chilean President Gabriel Boric called to work together for food security in the face of the effects caused by climate change.

More than 80 delegates from 23 countries are attending the meeting of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) taking place here at the regional headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

Boric addressed the event from the region of Coquimbo, in the Norte Chico, one of the regions most affected by the lack of rainfall in recent years, which has affected livestock, agriculture and all forms of production.

The different phenomena of the climate crisis, droughts, floods and fires are affecting all of us without discriminating borders, Boric said.

Boric considered it necessary for the next CELAC summit, in March, to be prepared and with clear policies to be able to face this reality, taking into account that 40% of the population of Latin America suffers from food problems, he said.

In this regard, he called for the improvement of irrigation systems, the treatment of indigenous communities, the promotion of peasant family agriculture and public policies in agro-industry and the forestry industry.

The meeting precedes the summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States to be held in March in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, where Honduras will receive the pro tempore presidency of this integration mechanism.
