Popular organizations demand real closure of Minera Panamá

Panama City, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Members of the "Pueblo Unido por la Vida" alliance will gather in front of the offices of the Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) to demand the closure of Minera Panamá.

According to one of the spokespersons for the group, Mario Almanza, the demonstration responds to the uncertainty regarding the execution of the plan for the preservation and safe management of the Donoso copper mine (Colón), following a visit to the site by the Executive, which was considered a mockery.

Recent reports from the Environmental Incidence Center (CIAM) point out existing dangers in the closure process of Minera Panamá, unrevealed by the Government.

CIAM warned about the presence of a pit in the mine where an accumulation of intense blue water has been observed, similar to that of copper sulfate (hydrated cupric sulfate). In addition, some walls of the pit show signs of reaction with rain water and the surrounding air, and coppery-yellowish stains can be observed, which suggests the possibility of the formation of acid drainage with high iron and sulfur content in the area, which could contaminate the surface and underground waters in the area.

CIAM biologist Isaías Ramos finds the lack of a clear roadmap worrying, following the ruling of the Supreme Court of Justice, which declared unconstitutional a contract signed with the State at the end of 2023, and the associated risks on site, where there is no movement of workers or machinery.

Concerning the waste deposits, it was noted that there is abundant material from mining exploitation, which requires constant supervision and management due to its potential high acidity. Furthermore, the process of managing these structures, as originally planned, is not sustainable in the long term.

Last week, several social unions and environmental groups gathered at the entrance of Minera Panamá. They demanded justice and sovereignty over the territory, the immediate closure of the company’s operations, and stopping environmental damage.
