Le Pen dominates French presidential poll

Paris, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) The leader of the French extreme right Marine Le Pen, leads voting intentions for a hypothetical presidential election, clearly ahead of the main official candidates, a poll reveals today.

In the survey by the French Institute of Public Opinion (IFOP) for the weekly Le Journal du Dimanche, a scenario was considered in which the first round of the elections scheduled for 2027 would be next Sunday, in which at least three out of 10 voters would vote for the founder of the National Group (RN).

If the current Prime Minister Gabriel Attal were the official candidate, Le Pen would dominate the first round with 32 percent, against 23, while if the former Prime Minister and mayor of Le Havre, Édouard Philippe, were the difference would end up 33-25.

If such a projection were confirmed in the presidential elections scheduled for 2027, the deputy and political heir of the far-right Jean-Marie Le Pen (her father) would win the runoff in the race for the Elysee Palace for the third consecutive vote.

The French president, Emmanuel Macron, defeated it in 2017 and 2022 in the second round, appealing to a so-called “republican front” to prevent the extreme right from coming to power, as has happened in other European countries, including Italy.

Le Pen is betting that such a scenario will not be repeated in her fourth election, which already worries various sectors on French soil, concerned about a possible triumph of nationalism.

The IFOP poll left the leader of Insoumise France, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, in third place in the hypothetical votes.

The investigation also considered the variant of the RN president, Jordan Bardella, being the candidate instead of Le Pen, and in both cases the ruling party would be equally defeated, Philippe would concede 27-26 and Attal 28-24.

At the end of December, RN confirmed that its representative in 2027 will be Le Pen, who announced that Bardella would receive the appointment of prime minister if she reached the Elysée.
