Prosecutor requests 34 years in prison for former President Castillo

Lima, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) The Peruvian Public Prosecutor's Office on Friday requested a 34-year prison sentence for former President Pedro Castillo, when formalizing the accusation of rebellion, abuse of authority and serious disturbance of public tranquility.

The indictment was filed more than a year ago, after the then president was arrested on December 7, 2022 by his own bodyguard, imprisoned and dismissed by Parliament, following his failure to dissolve the opposition-controlled Legislature and reorganize the justice system. The Public Prosecutor’s Office also requested 25 years of imprisonment for former Prime Minister Betssy Chávez, and the former ministers of the Interior, Willy Huerta; and Foreign Trade and Tourism and progressive parliamentarian, Roberto Sánchez, as co-perpetrators of the crime of rebellion.

For the same charge, the Prosecutor’s Office requested 15 years of imprisonment for Aníbal, who was Minister of Justice and Prime Minister in the Government initiated by Castillo on July 28, 2021, who was with him when he announced the dissolution of the Congress, but was no longer part of the government.

The list of defendants also includes three police officers who supported the then president, General Manuel Lozada, Commander Justo Venero and Lieutenant Eder Antonio Infanzón, for whom the prosecutor requested 25 years in prison.
