Guterres urges respect for international law after attacks on Yemen

United Nations, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) The Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, urged today to respect international law and prevent the spread of conflagrations even further after the recent bombings by the United States and the United Kingdom against Yemen.

In a statement released by his spokesperson, the head of the United Nations considered that attacks against international shipping in the Red Sea area are not acceptable “as they endanger the security of global supply chains and have a negative impact on the economic and humanitarian situation around the world.”

Guterres called for full respect of Security Council Resolution 2722 (2024), adopted this week, which demands the cessation of the escalation initiated by the Houthis in response to Israel’s aggression against the Gaza Strip.

However, those who defend their ships from attacks must do so in accordance with international law, as stipulated in the resolution, the high representative emphasized.

The head of the UN called on all parties involved not to further worsen the situation in the interest of peace and stability in the Red Sea and the entire region.

In this sense, he recognized the need to avoid acts that could worsen the situation in Yemen itself and called for insisting on all possible efforts to ensure that the country follows a path of peace and preserve the work done to end the conflict.

The bombings by the United States and the United Kingdom against Yemeni cities launched the day before left five people dead and six injured.

Houthi forces spokesman Yahya Saree estimated that more than 70 attacks were carried out against several cities, including Al-Hudaydah, Sanaa, Dhamar and Sa’dah.

The United States recognized their participation in coordination with the United Kingdom and with the support of Australia, Canada, the Netherlands and Bahrain while Russia and China described them as a direct threat to global peace and security.
