Brazilian Navy delivers second submarine with diesel-electric engine

Brasilia, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) The Brazilian Navy will deliver the Humaitá submersible, the second one built by the Submarine Development Program (PROSUB), an initiative that emerged from an agreement signed with France in 2008.

Developed for the construction of vessels, PROSUB uses the transfer of technology between countries, with the purpose of developing four conventional submarines one of which is the French Scorpène class vessel and the manufacture of the first national nuclear-powered submarine, scheduled for completion in 2029 and launch in 2033.

Such project is being implemented at the naval complex in Itaguaí, a municipality in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

Humaitá is 72 meters long and has a displacement capacity of 1.8 thousand tons. The vessel is the second of four submersibles purchased from the DCNS shipyard and financed by the BNP Paribas bank, both French, in 2008.

According to the newspaper O Estado de Sao Paulo, the participation of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in the delivery ceremony was planned, but was canceled on Wednesday.
