According to the text issued by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, although the Government is willing to repatriate the Colombian citizens deprived of their freedom in Ecuador, it clarified that such a procedure would analyze each case.
The statement pointed out that this process is individual, responds to objective criteria, and should have the prisoner’s consent.
The controversy on this issue is motivated by the statements made by Ecuador’s President Daniel Noboa, who assured that he would place 1,500 Colombians serving sentences in his country at the border of the neighboring country to alleviate the overcrowding of the prisons with their release.
“Colombia said it wanted to help us, and I said perfect, we have already sent the 1,500 prisoners held in Ecuadorian jails,” Noboa said in an interview with Radio Canela station, referring to the offers of help from other nations in light of the situation of violence prevailing in Ecuador these days.
