Aboul Gheit stated that he hopes for “a just verdict that stops this war of aggression (against the Gaza Strip) and puts an end to (…) bloodshed.”
He thanked South Africa and its Government for adopting that principled position and reaffirmed the pan-Arab organization’s support for Egypt’s efforts by all possible means. He also announced that he gave instructions to League authorities to follow the legal course of the case presented before the Court.
“The case represents an important step, not only towards a ceasefire, but also to hold Israel accountable and put an end to the abnormal situation that turned it into a State above international law,” he stressed.
At the end of last year, South Africa filed a lawsuit against Israel before the ICJ for acts of genocide against the population in Gaza, where more than 23,000 deaths and 58,000 injuries have been reported since October 7th.
The court will hear the complaint this Thursday and will later adjourn to deliberate, and tomorrow will receive Israel’s arguments.
