Lula, Kishida to discuss possibility of Mercosur-Japan agreement

Brasilia, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday spoke by phone with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida about a possible trade agreement between the Southern Common Market (MERCOSUR) and Japan.

Both leaders also discussed issues on the bilateral agenda to strengthen the strategic partnership and trade between the two nations.

According to sources, Lula and Kishida discussed cooperation between Brazil and Japan in multilateral international forums in favor of peace, democracy, and overcoming poverty priority issues for the South American nation in the G20 presidency.

“President Lula thanked Kishida for inviting him in 2023 to attend (as a guest) the G7+China Summit in Hiroshima, and expressed his desire for Japan to be involved in all the G20 discussion forums this year,” the presidential statement said.

The Brazilian President stressed “the need to bring the debate on climate change and renewable energies to the center of the G20 discussions”.

He also pondered that “Brazil will launch at the G20 a global alliance against hunger and poverty, and that overcoming inequalities is pivotal for the defense of democracy”.

On the other hand, according to the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Power, Lula expressed solidarity with the Japanese people and in particular with the victims of the January 1 earthquakes.
