Colombia grants geothermal energy project to Canadian company

Bogota, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian Ministry of Mines on Wednesday confirmed that the first geothermal energy and power generation project in the northeast of the country had been granted to a Canadian company.

According to information disclosed on social networks by the Ministry, the award to Parex was signed by Colombian President Gustavo Petro.

Additionally, local media reported that the project would be developed in an area of 4.2 square kilometers, in the municipalities of Mani and Aguazul, in Casanare department (northeast), where the Canadian company has an oil and gas exploitation contract.

It also revealed that the planned power generation capacity is estimated to be between 15 and 60 kilowatts (kW), with the possibility of increasing it to 120 kW, and that the permit will be valid until September 2041.

The Colombian Geological Service (SGC) informed two years ago that the total installed capacity planned for Colombia, with systems based on geothermal energy, would be 1,170 megawatts (MW).

This energy source is favored by Colombia’s geographic and geological location in the Pacific Ring of Fire.
