Bhutan’s People’s Democratic Party wins elections

Tshering-Tobgay
Thimphu, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) The Electoral Commission of Bhutan (ECB) showed on Wednesday that the People's Democratic Party (PDP), led by Tshering Tobgay, won the general election.

According to preliminary results, the PDP secured 30 out of 47 seats in the National Assembly, defeating the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP) as its only rival.

With this result, this Asian nation is set to form a new government with the return to power of Tshering Tobgay, who was prime minister from 2013 to 2018.

Located between India and China, Bhutan, with a total population of about 770,000 inhabitants, has a unique two-round electoral system.

The first round of the elections was held in November 2023, in which the ruling Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party came in fourth place and was subsequently disqualified.

According to experts, the new government faces decisive challenges, including the country’s economic dynamism.
