Angola hopes to join the African Union Peace and Security Council

Union-Africana
Luanda, Jan 10 (Prensa Latina) Angola hopes to join the Peace and Security Council of the African Union (AU), whose elections will take place at the summit of heads of State and Government on February 17th and 18th.

South Africa will formalize its candidacy for the rotating presidency of the AU Commission at the end of 2024, but at this moment the focus is on the Peace and Security Council (PSC), according to the ambassador to Ethiopia and representative to the AU, Miguel Domingos Bembe, who added that the candidacy was submitted to the Office of the Legal Counsel of the AU Commission on September 21st, 2023, and ratified by the Embassy of Namibia in Ethiopia, in its capacity as dean of the region.

Angola seeks to play an increasingly assertive and dynamic role in regional, continental and international organizations, contributing to the processes of consolidating peace, stability, security and sustainable development in Africa, the diplomat said.

The elections will be held at the ordinary session of the Executive Council and the ordinary session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the African Union, scheduled for February 17th and 18th this year.

Angola would join the CPS for the 2024-2025 biennium, together with Botswana, representing the Southern African region, and it would be the fourth time that it is part of the organization

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union is a permanent decision-making body for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts in Africa, which acts as a collective security and early warning structure to facilitate an effective response to crisis situations.
