UN calls for desperate humanitarian assistance for northern Gaza

United Nations, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) The civilian population desperately needs humanitarian assistance, and in particular food throughout Gaza, especially in the northern areas, the emergency coordinator of the World Health Organization (WHO), Sean Casey, confirmed on Tuesday.

The food situation in the north is absolutely horrible, there is almost no food available, he told the WHO envoy in remarks from Rafah and released here.

“Everyone we talk to is asking for food and coming up and asking where the food is. People help us get our medical supplies to us. But they constantly tell us that we have to go back with food,” Casey described.

Rik Peeperkorn, WHO representative for the occupied Palestinian territory, in turn, considered the eventual creation of humanitarian corridors that would function on a sustained basis as a matter of urgency.

The safe and rapid movement of personnel and supplies remains compromised, given the requirements for any movement through the Gaza Strip, including the south, which often results in delays, he regretted.

In addition to humanitarian aid, the movement of workers is urgently needed to reach people wherever they are, he insisted.

The UN and its partners are ready to provide assistance to the people of Gaza, Peeperkorn said, but hostilities and evacuation orders in central Gaza and further south in Khan Younis have affected the access to hospitals for patients and ambulances.

The context has become incredibly complex to reach health facilities with medical supplies and fuel, he added.
