Chilean Communists prepare traditional Hugs Party

Santiago de Chile, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) The Communist Party of Chile (PCCh) is giving the final touches today for the celebration of the popular Fiesta de los Abrazos (Hugs Party), to be held this weekend in the O'Higgins Park of this capital.

The 35th version of this meeting will have a popular, family character of great importance for the culture and identity of the communist, leftist and progressive world in our country, said the group in a statement released here.

The event takes up several traditions of the CCP, among them the celebration of January 2 as the day on which, in 1922, the Socialist Workers Party changed its name to the current one and which was banned by Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973-1990).

During the coup regime, the political organization was subject to intense repression and many of its members were captured, tortured and killed, so its members went underground.

Moreover, during that period it was common that when some of them met and recognized each other, they would give each other a hug as a sign of joy for being well.

In 1988, in the death throes of the dictatorship, the first version was held under the name of Fiesta del Arte, la Ciencia y la Cultura por la Democracia en Chile and since 1992 the O’Higgins Park was adopted as the venue.

Within a broad program of activities, the book Carrizal Bajo: El año definitivo, by the late president of the Communist Party of Chile, Guillermo Teillier, will be reprinted. National and international personalities will participate on Saturday and Sunday in a series of forums in the Gladys Marin, Luis Emilio Recabarren, Guillermo Teillier and Alejandro Lipschütz Science Institute tents.
