“Given the vulnerability of the countries in the region to adverse natural events, it is essential to strengthen preparation, response and recovery from these phenomena,” said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile.
Another of the challenges of recent years is that of human mobility, which is why Chile will seek to promote dialogue for a comprehensive approach that guarantees the protection of the human rights of migrants, and at the same time promotes an orderly, safe and regular flow.
Chile also hopes to strengthen cooperation to address transnational crime through the exchange of information, joint strategies and strengthening institutional capacities.
Chile assumed the presidency of the Brasilia Consensus for six months during an online meeting with the participation of the acting Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs, Rodrigo Olsen, the Secretary of Latin America and the Caribbean of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Brazil, Gisela Padovan, and the national coordinators of the countries of the region.
The instrument is a mechanism aimed at strengthening ties between the 12 countries of South America, promoting cooperation and to raise the voice of the subregion in the world. It was established in a meeting of leaders of the region convened on May 30th, 2023 by president of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The Brasilia Consensus is based on dialogue and respect for the diversity of peoples, commitment to human rights, sustainable development, defense of sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs.
