Bhutan holds general elections

Butan
Thimphu, Jan 9 (Prensa Latina) Bhutan holds general elections on Tuesday to elect its fourth National Assembly, the 47-seat lower house of the bicameral legislature between the candidates of the People's Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP).

Located between India and China, Bhutan, with a total population of about 770,000, has a unique two-round electoral system.

The first round of the elections was held in November 2023, in which the ruling Druk Nyamrup Tshogpa (DNT) party came in fourth place and was subsequently disqualified.

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the Bhutan Tendrel Party (BTP), which are currently vying to receive the keys to the parliament, face leading challenges such as boosting the country’s economy, according to experts.
