Glas’ team of international lawyers, represented by Belgian law firm Juscogens, issued a statement denying any connection to the Metastasis case or an alleged payment for the former vice-governor’s freedom.

According to the Prosecutor’s Office, drug trafficker Leandro Neorero, murdered in October 2022, paid for Glas’ release from prison, which occurred on November 28 of that year, that is, after the criminal’s death.

“This situation is presented as part of a smear campaign and media criminalization, without a proven formal link,” the defense said.

In addition, it rejects the denial of pre-release, a decision based on the non-compliance of group activities, even though Glas remained in forced isolation for security and health reasons.

The lawyers also point out possible political motivations in relation to the so-called Reconstruction of Manabí case, within which they ask him preventive imprisonment before an alleged embezzlement for the execution of public works in that province after the 2016 earthquake.

In view of what he considers a persecution, the former vice-governor officially requested asylum from the Mexican government, while he has been staying since Sunday, December 17 at the diplomatic headquarters of that nation in Quito.

The Ecuadorian government warned that it would deplore a possible granting of asylum by Mexico and explained that it would act firmly in this case.
