France ratifies commitment to nuclear energy

Paris, Jan 7 (Prensa Latina) The French Minister of Energy Transition, Agnès Pannier-Runacher, today ratified the country's bet on nuclear energy with the construction of reactors beyond the six planned, which will reduce dependence on oil.

In declarations to La Tribune Dimanche, the Minister pointed out that this vision will be part of the energy sovereignty bill that she will present in the coming weeks, with the objective of lowering dependence on fossil fuels from 60 to 40 percent by 2035.

The government is implementing a program to build six new European Pressurized Reactors (EPR), with eight optional ones, devices conceived in 1990 by France and Germany to establish a safer and more cost-effective nuclear technology.

According to Pannier-Runacher, an additional 13 gigawatts need to be generated from 2026, the equivalent of eight reactors.

The aim is to free France from dependence on fossil energy, reduce carbon dioxide emissions and protect citizens’ purchasing power, she stressed.
