Receiving separately the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy of the European Union (EU), Josep Borrell, Parliament Speakier Nabih Berri, and acting Prime Minister Najib Mikati emphasized that the implementation of Resolution 1701 of the UN Security Council begins with the cessation of Israeli aggression.
In this context, the Lebanese cabinet chief warned that any large-scale bombing in southern Lebanon will lead the region to a generalized explosion.
At the same time, Mikati expressed to Borrell the need to work towards establishing a comprehensive solution to the Palestinian issue by granting their just rights.
For his part, Borrell expressed his great concern over the continued war in the Gaza Strip, and his wish it does not expand into Lebanon.
In his first activity in Beirut, the European diplomat reaffirmed his firm support to the United Nations Interim Force (Unifil), which plays a crucial role in preventing and mitigating a military escalation.
According to what was disclosed, the Commander and head of the Unifil Mission, Lieutenant General Aroldo Lazaro, updated on the current hostility and risks along the Blue Line, the border area between Lebanon and Israel.
In his official account on X, the EU Foreign Minister reaffirmed that the priority is to avoid regional escalation and to advance diplomatic efforts with a view to creating the conditions for achieving a just and lasting peace between Israel, Palestine and in the region.
Borrell is making his tour to the country amid an increasingly intense exchange of fire on both sides of the border due to persistent Israeli aggression, which this week included an attack on the southern suburb of Beirut, and the Lebanese Resistance’s response to Zionist crimes and in support of Gaza.
