In this city the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution Fidel Castro Ruz spoke to the people from one of the balconies of the current Ruben Martinez Villena Library.
The people of Sancti Spíritus will gather in this historic place to pay homage to the caravan members who are still with us and to listen once again to those speech that Fidel delivered for eternity to the children of this land: ‘This city of Sancti Spíritus could not be for me, just another city in our journey.
Alcibiades Aguilar, member of the caravan, recalls how on January 5, 1959 the people of Sancti Spíritus opened their arms to Fidel Castro and the caravanists when they arrived in this part of Cuba, where they fought in Yaguajay and Villa Clara until January 1st.
Talking to Prensa Latina Aguilar, who came from Oriente in the victorious column and resides in Sancti Spíritus, affirmed that these were days where Cubans celebrated the victory and at the same time the defeat of the tyranny that filled thousands of Cuban families with mourning.
