Argentine mayors file appeal against presidential decree

Buenos Aires, Jan 4 (Prensa Latina) A total of 500 mayors, grouped in the Argentine Federation of Municipalities (FAM), filed an appeal against the decree of necessity and urgency (DNU) 70/2023 of President Javier Milei, the news agency Télam reported.

According to the news agency, the appeal requests the Federal Contentious-Administrative Chamber to leave the DNU without effect until the senators and deputies analyze it and communicate whether they accept or reject it.

From the FAM we decided to work to put a stop to the unconstitutional action promoted by the Government. That is why we filed this appeal before the courts to stop the DNU that violates the rights of the Argentine people, the president of that organization, Fernando Espinoza, explained.

He also stated that the measures included in the decree seriously affect many aspects of citizens’ lives, leaving retirees unprotected and attacking small and medium-sized companies and regional producers.

In the injunction, the mayors warn that the DNU violates the Constitution “by attacking the general principle enshrined in Article 99, paragraph 3, which is the prohibition of the President to issue legislative provisions”.

The DNU was published in the Official Gazette on December 21 and reforms or repeals more than 300 regulations, including the privatization of state-owned companies, deregulation of the economy and labor reform, among other actions rejected by thousands of people who went to the Congress and took to the streets of several cities in this country to express their discontent.
