Tension in Palestine rises following assassination of Hamas leader

Ramallah, Jan 3 (Prensa Latina) The West Bank is on strike following Israel’s assassination of the acting leader of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), Saleh al-Arouri, in an action condemned by the Palestinian government and parties, and which threatens to escalate regional violence.

Another six people lost their lives in the raid, including Samir Fandi and Azzam Al-Aqraa, two leaders of the armed wing of Hamas.

Regional television stations showed demonstrations in villages and cities in the West bank after the death of Al-Arouri in an attack, in Beirut, capital of Lebanon, became known.

The Al-Aqsa Martyr Brigades, affiliated to the Fatah Movement, issued a statement affirming that Al-Arouri’s death “will only increase our determination to resist”.

Prime Minister of Palestine Mohammad Shtayyeh condemned the assassination, and warned of its repercussions in the region.

The head of the political office of Hamas, Ismail Haniyeh, called the attack a full-on terrorist attack, and an expansion of Israeli hostilities against Palestinians.

The Islamic Yihad spoke out in a similar vein, stating that the assassination “is an attempt by the enemy to increase the reach of confrontations in order to drag the region to war”.
