Amadu Koita is suspected, along with 11 other people, of masterminding the failed attempt to violate the constitutional order, carried out last November 26 by armed men who attacked an army barracks.
The prosecution filed charges against Koita and his alleged accomplices for treason, concealment of treason and harboring, aiding and abetting the enemy, among others, the country’s Information Minister, Chernor Bah, said in a statement.
Koroma, under house arrest at his residence in this city, was also considered a suspect in the preparation of the coup, for which he was called to testify on several occasions.
At the time, William Fayia Sellu, inspector general of the police, said that the alleged participants in the coup are under investigation, including, in addition, 50 military personnel, seven police officers and 15 civilians.
The armed action took place a few months after the elections of last June 24, when Julius Maada Bio was re-elected with 56,17% of the votes, a result unknown at the time by the opposition in the streets.
However, opposition candidate Samura Kamara rejected the coup, which was also condemned by several international organizations, including the Economic Community of West African States, the European Union and the UN.
