Sancti Spíritus, Cuba, Jan 2 (Prensa Latina) Infant mortality rating in Cuba´s Sancti Spíritus central province closed 2023 with 4.8 per 1,000 live births, among lowest in Cuba nowadays, as revealed by the Maternal and Infant Care Program (PAMI).

Frank García, PAMI´s Director, said the central province reported 3,100 births in 2023. Best municipalities were Jatibonico with no deaths under one year of age and Trinidad, with 1.7 per 1,000 live births.

García detailed the deaths were especially related to perinatal conditions, pulmonary hypertension, intrauterine growth retardation (SIUR) and prematurity.

One maternal death was registered in 2023, according to García who also praised the significance of counting on maternity homes in all the municipalities after the reopening one in La Sierpe municipality. Regarding positive results in 2023, García highlighted the combination of primary and secondary health care, which was able to overcome difficulties and lack of means, supplies and medicines, linked to the economic crisis and limitations caused by the unjust and hostile US blockade.
