Zambia cholera campaign to be scaled up due to rising infections

Colera-Vacuna-768x509
Lusaka, Dec 30 (Prensa Latina) The explosion of cholera infections in this capital and other cities forced the Zambian health authorities to adopt more drastic measures, according to official announcements today.

The latest government data registers almost a hundred deaths due to the disease, whose initial outbreak dates back to last October and since then has defeated all the initiatives and the awareness campaign decreed by the Ministry of Health to stop its overwhelming advance.

The measures announced by the Ministers of Health, Sylvia Masebo, and Water Resources, Mike Mposha, are more domestic hygiene and an increase in the dose of chlorine for water for human consumption in the areas with the highest incidence of the disease.

The Public Health Minister revealed that the mortality rate currently exceeds 3 percent, well above the 1 percent considered acceptable by international standards. The official figures are based on statistics on the progress of the disease, according to which, in the last 24 hours alone, five infected persons died and 111 new ones were recorded.

Local experts told the press that the spread of the disease in this southern African country is due to the heavy rains that are affecting vast areas of the country.

The rainfall favors the formation of clean water reservoirs ideal environment for the disease-causing bacteria to multiply.
