Guatemalan government commemorates 27 years of peace accords

Guatemala City, December 29 (Prensa Latina) Guatemala commemorated with the exchange of the Rose of Peace the Agreements signed on this day in 1996 that put an end to 36 years of armed conflict.

In the capital’s National Palace of Culture, without the presence of President Alejandro Giammattei, the executive director of the Commission for Peace and Human Rights, Ramiro Contreras, stressed that the issue is a priority.

To achieve peace, the effort of the population is necessary, together with government actions through real, transparent and efficient interventions, in pursuit of said objective, the official stated.

He said the entity in his charge, subordinated to the presidency, has been in operation for three years, in which it transparently promoted the consolidation of democracy, justice and respect for human rights.

Among the different actions developed, he mentioned the creation of 17 regional headquarters at the national level, while highlighting the effective and historical defense of the State of Guatemala.

He highlighted the implementation of the “Ambassador of Peace” program, an initiative that recognizes the work and actions promoted by the Executive agencies and other social actors, from their institutional competencies to promote a culture of peace and dialogue.

The change of the Rose of Peace was carried out by the general commander of Volunteer Firefighters, Giovanni Cordón; and the presidential commissioner for Religious Freedom, Robín Agustín García.

The Human Rights Ombudsman of Guatemala, Alejandro Córdova, emphasized this morning in a statement that substantive problems that the Agreements sought to be resolved still persist.

Political analysts agreed that the country’s current administration has done the opposite of building a culture of peace.

“Everything has been corruption, violence, an increase in evictions throughout the country, political repression and attacks on human rights defenders,” said the coordinator of the Human Rights Defenders Unit of Guatemala, Jorge Santos.

Twelve agreements put an end to the conflict, the last one, that of Firm and Lasting Peace, was signed on December 29, 1996 by the four commanders of the Guatemalan National Revolutionary Unit, as well as the then president Álvaro Arzú (1996-2000).

The National Palace itself would be the venue for the event, with the presence of 10 Heads of State and Government and another two thousand guests and delegates from various sectors.
