UN welcomes new steps on the path to peace in Yemen

United Nations, Dec 27 (Prensa Latina) The UN welcomed the recent progress towards the ceasefire in Yemen, considering it as a new opportunity towards lasting peace.

The United Nations special envoy for Yemen, Hans Grundberg, welcomed in a recent statement the route outlined after a series of meetings with the parties held in Riyadh and Muscat.

The representative acknowledged the commitment to a set of measures to implement a nationwide ceasefire, improve living conditions and undertake preparations for the resumption of an inclusive political process under the auspices of the UN. “Thirty million Yemenis are watching and waiting for this new opportunity to achieve tangible results and progress towards lasting peace,” he said.

Grundberg described what was agreed as an important step for the parties. “Your commitments are, above all, an obligation to the Yemeni people to move towards a future that meets the legitimate aspirations of all Yemenis,” he stated.

According to the announcement, the UN special envoy will now collaborate with the parties to establish a roadmap under the supervision of the UN.

The project will include, among other elements, a commitment by the parties to implement a nationwide ceasefire, pay all public sector salaries, resume oil exports, open roads in Taiz and other parts of Yemen, and further ease restrictions at Sana’a airport and Hudaydah port. It will also establish other mechanisms and prepare a Yemeni-owned political process under the guidance of the UN.

Grundberg thanked Saudi Arabia and Oman for their mediation and support to the parties in reaching this point, and urged all those involved to exercise maximum restraint at this critical time to allow an environment conducive to dialogue and the successful conclusion of an agreement on the roadmap.
