Uruguay to hold plebiscites

Montevideo, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) Uruguayans will elect the presidential shortlist and the legislators of Congress on October 27th, 2024. On that same date, several plebiscites have been planned.

That year could be the highest in terms of number of plebiscites (five). Out of them, the one assured is seeking to approve police night raids, for which the ruling National Party obtained the necessary signatures in Parliament.

The main argument in defense of the said plebiscite is that regulations are needed to further address insecurity, particularly drug trafficking.

There are four other initiatives whose proponents are fighting to present it in the 2024 elections: the social security reform law, for which the PIT-CNT union center is collecting signatures; the restructuring of debts owed to individuals, promoted by the Cabildo Abierto party; the regulation of State investment contracts, supported by the Sovereign Uruguay movement, and which postulates that legislative approval is mandatory “in cases in which it implies subjection of the country to foreign jurisdiction”; and the one that proposes that the position of court prosecutor be occupied no more than 60 days after vacancy.

The proposals must gather the signatures of 10 percent of those registered in the National Civic Registry in order to be presented in the elections on October 27th, 2024.
