About 19 percent of Dominicans live abroad

Santo Domingo, Dec 26 (Prensa Latina) About 19 percent of Dominicans live abroad, mainly in the United States and Europe, while the immigrant population in the country accounts four percent of the total, it was reported on Monday.

According to the National Roundtable for Migration and Refugees (MENAMIRD), the Dominican Republic benefits from a large volume of remittances, which contribute 7 percent to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

In this regard, MENAMIRD Coordinator William Charpantier commented that according to figures from the Central Bank (BC), the flow of remittances exceeded 9.2 billion dollars between January and November 2023.

In October alone, 827.1 million dollars for this concept were transferred to the Dominican Republic, which represents an increase of 1.4 percent compared to the same month in 2022.

Regarding the nations of origin, the BC indicated that in October, 85.2 percent of the money came from the United States, where the Dominican community is the largest, followed by Spain (5.5 percent), Haiti ( 0.9 percent) and Italy (0.8 percent).

Dominican emigrants are concentrated mainly in countries with a high level of development: just over 70 percent in North America and 17 percent in Europe; About 9 percent reside in Latin America and 1 percent in Asia or Africa.
