Cuba’s new public health law is expected to benefit population

Havana, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) The new public health law discussed by the Cuban National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP) generates some expectations among Cubans for its impact on the country's great health care system.

According to statements made to Prensa Latina by the Director of the provincial Hospital in Ciego d Avila, Dr. Alberto Moronta, the new regulation endorses the constitutional principle of respect for a free and quality access to health services in Cuba.

Likewise, the new law includes critical issues for the benefits of population that are the result of the recent approval of the new Family Code including the use of assisted reproduction techniques in infertile couples, Dr. Moronta added.

The law makes a broad update on the ways of conceiving a pregnancy and the measures related to sexual and reproductive health in general, the physician added.

Dr. Moronta said the legal instrument reinforces and adapts Cubans´ duties and rights to modern times, as well as the due health protection of workers.

The young parliamentarian assured that the new health regulation is in line with the international regulatory framework and health systems globally, while strengthening the strategic vision towards the future of Cuban medicine.

These peculiarities of Cuba’s public health law will make it last in time, since it contains many new elements, on which internal regulations will be issued to make it more viable, Dr. Moronta stressed.

He mentioned the possibilities for people to make decisions on the end of their life, associated to the autonomy to decide on a dignified death, which will be subject to procedures and regulations yet to be set.

The process around the approved norm, assured Dr. Moranta, has just begun, since it is complemented by several sectors of the country that are outside the institutional framework of the Public Health Ministry (MINSAP), among them the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, the Ministry of Higher Education, among others.
