UN calls for stepping-up solution to Gaza crisis

United Nations, Dec 23 (Prensa Latina) The UNSC approval of a resolution for the "sustainable cessation of hostilities" and the calls to extend humanitarian aid confirms the emergency of crisis in Gaza for the UN.

On Friday, the UNSC finally gave the green light to a negotiated instrument with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions (Russia and the United States), after a week of intense diplomatic efforts to avoid its failure due to the US veto.

The document presented by the United Arab Emirates called for the immediate, safe and unimpeded delivery of aid to civilians in Gaza and demands a pressing release of the hostages.

However, in view of UN Secretary-General (UNSG) António Guterres, the current context in Gaza demands much more than the approved resolution.

A humanitarian cease-fire is the only way to meet the desperate needs of Palestinians and put an end to their ongoing nightmare, the UN chief said in a press conference.
