Senator Carlos Camy, from the National Party, said at a press conference that in the next national elections, scheduled for October 27, 2024, there will be a referendum on whether or not to approve nighttime police raids on homes.
According to Camy, the prohibition of raids made drug trafficking, organized crime and delinquency “use this advantage that the Constitution of the Republic or this provision gives them to carry out their criminal activities at night.”
The proposal was sent to the Electoral Court to validate the signatures and organize the call, which the Frente Amplio (Broad Front) opposed.
Raids are not considered in the current legislation, and the proposal is that they be approved by a judge “in accordance with the law.”
The opposition refutes that a plebiscite with similar terms did not reach the votes in the 2019 presidential and legislative elections, and was interpreted as a maneuver in light of the Government’s failure to curb insecurity.
Another consultation proposal, promoted by the PIT-CNT union confederation, is in the phase of collecting signatures and aims to reform the retirement regime that the government managed to impose with a parliamentary majority.
