UN agencies predict famine in Gaza due to conflict

United Nations, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) Specialized UN agencies warn of a scenario of famine in Gaza for the coming months if access to food and drinking water is not immediately established.

The Food Security Phase Classification report considers that the situation is desperate, and estimates that over a quarter of the population in the enclave suffers from extreme hunger.

26 percent of households in the Strip have exhausted their food reserves and capabilities so they are already suffering from extreme hunger, which will turn into famine unless access to adequate food, clean water, and health and sanitation services is restored.

Statistics prepared for the Food and Agriculture Organization and the World Food Program confirm the devastating scene caused by the crisis in Gaza, where no one is safe from hunger.

About 85 percent of the population, approximately 1.9 million people, are displaced, many have had to relocate several times and are concentrated in an increasingly smaller area.

The risk also grows due to the intensification of hostilities, the reduction of access to food, basic services and vital assistance, and the extreme concentration or isolation of people in inadequate shelters or areas without basic services.

Based on the UN report, the total population of the Strip, estimated at nearly 2.2 million persons, is already in crisis or at worse levels of acute crisis of food insecurity, according to which famine will occur in the next six months if the conflict continues and restrictions on access to essential goods persist.
