Cuba celebrates declaration of bolero as World Heritage

Havana, Dec 22 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is celebrating the declaration of the bolero as Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, a category granted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to help promote and safeguard this musical genre.

Organizers said that the event will take place at the Avellaneda Hall of the National Theater of Cuba, with the show ‘Un Bolero para Ti’ (A Bolero for You).

The gala will be directed by Maestro José Loyola, founder of the Boleros de Oro International Festival, one of the most solid platforms for the promotion of that genre.

The gala will feature Cuban Bolero singers Sergio Farias, Mundito González, Anais Abreu, Emilia Morales, Paulo FG, Eduardo Sosa and the Los Embajadores trio.

Lartiza Bacallao, Rachel Valladares, Annie Garces and Anairis Blanco will join this celebration, along with established artists Leo Montesinos and Vania Borges.

The president of the Association of Musicians of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), Orlando Vistel, stressed that the celebration is part of an effort by that organization, in conjunction with the Ministry of Culture and the Cuban Music Institute to acknowledge authors, musicians, promoters and spaces that keep alive the tradition of the practice of bolero.

The declaration of Cuban musical genre with this category was approved by UNESCO on December 5, after the presentation of a bi-national candidacy by Cuba and Mexico, and from that moment the celebrations began in both countries, transcending the borders and the traditional spaces of promotion.

Cuban musician Pepe Sanchez immortalized the bolero when he composed the song ‘Tristezas’ (Sadness) in 1883.

Sanchez was far from imagining that more than 100 years after his song was composed, that musical genre would be declared Cultural and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.
