Buenos Aires, Dec 20 (Prensa Latina) Thousands of protesters arrived today at the capital's Plaza de Mayo to denounce the adjustment plan of the Argentine president, Javier Milei, despite the deployment of numerous troops as part of a strong police operation.

While the president and the Minister of Security, Patricia Bullrich, supervised the protocol from the Central Police Department, members of social organizations, unions and defenders of human rights went out to the main avenues of this city to express their discontent with the measures of the current management.

With signs such as ¨No to adjustment¨ and ¨In the end the loser was the people¨, members of the Polo Obrero (PO), the Left Front (FIT), Patria Grande, the Communist Party, the Railway Union, the Memory, Truth and Justice Meeting, the Peace and Justice Service, among other groups, demanded respect for the rights of all citizens.

Among the participants were former presidential candidates Myriam Bregman and Juan Grabois, the representative of Madres de Plaza de Mayo-Línea Fundadora, Nora Cortiñas, and union leaders.

In statements to the press, the PO member, Eduardo Belliboni, denounced the activation of “an enormous repressive device”.

“They came armed to the teeth, they beat journalists and protesters, but we managed to break that siege. We are marching peacefully. “This is a military dictatorship”, he asserted.

For her part, FIT deputy Vanina Biasi condemned the actions to intimidate those who protested.

In turn, Bregman warned that “the right to defend our rights is at stake” and described the Government’s measures as unpopular.

Since the morning, members of the Gendarmerie, the Naval Prefecture, the Airport Security Police and the Federal Police, carried out controls on highways, train stations, near Congress and the Casa Rosada, among other public places.

Television channel C5N reported clashes between citizens and officers who tried to stop protesters from marching through the streets.

The demonstration coincides with the 22nd anniversary of the social outbreak of 2001 that led to the resignation of the then president, Fernando de la Rúa, and has among its objectives to condemn “the adjustment and misery plan of Milei and the International Monetary Fund and defend the right to protest.”
